Bringing fresh and healthy food to the stores and tables in New Orleans has been a focus of FPAC since our inception in 2007. This has been done through public-private partnerships and collaboration.
Fresh Food Retailer Initiative: In 2011, in response to FPAC report and recommendations, Stepping up to the Plate (link to report), the City of New Orleans established the Fresh Food Retailer Initiative in 2011. This $14 million loan program is administered by the City of New Orleans; Hope Enterprise Corporation (HOPE) and The Food Trust are partners in administering this citywide program.
Healthy Corner Store Collaborative’s Good 2 Go Initiative- Through work done in the business development working group, FPAC steering committee member Propeller and FPAC partners Liberty’s Kitchen and Top Box Foods have partnered with City of New Orleans to launch a healthy corner store program in 5 neighborhoods throughout New Orleans, which leverages existing infrastructure in local corner stores to make fresh, healthy foods more accessible to families in food deserts as well as increase profits for store owners.
