October is Farm to School Month
October is Farm to School month. Join thousands of schools, early care and education sites, farms, communities and organizations across the country to celebrate food education, school gardens and lunch trays filled with healthy, local ingredients.
Join the celebration in Louisiana with LSU Ag Center and Market Umbrella who lead the statewide Farm to School movement. The Louisiana Farm to School Program will host the annual Louisiana Farm to School Conference on October 23, 2019 at the Pennington Biomedical Conference Center. A special Meet the Buyer, Greet the Grower event will kick off the conference on the evening of October 22 to provide farmers and school nutrition staff the opportunity to network and identify opportunities for increasing local food in school meals. The general conference on October 23 will address topics such as school gardening challenges, child nutrition, produce safety, barriers of farm to school, educational resources, and sourcing local food in schools. The conference will include panel discussions, breakout sessions, and opportunities for networking throughout the day.
In addition to Farm to School, which focuses on k-12, October also celebrates Farm to Early Childcare Education (ECE). FPAC is currently doing Farm to ECE work in New Orleans and will soon be releasing an online toolkit for those interested in bringing fresh, healthy food to their ECE center.
Our work is made possible by the generous support of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.
