Food Bank and Emergency Feeding Program shutdown resources
How are food banks responding to partial government shutdown and how to get involved.

Second Harvest is directing furloughed federal workers with immediate food needs to call 1-855-392-9338 to be referred to a pantry near them. For assistance with both food and other expenses, such as utility bills or rent, individuals can call 211.
There are a number of pantries, open near locations with a high concentration of federal workers (MSY, Belle Chasse Naval Air Station), that are ready to respond. In addition, pop-up pantries are being set-up to assist families at the request of certain organizations. Any emergency pantry in Second Harvest’s service area is ready to meet the needs of furloughed workers but some individuals may be more comfortable attending one of these temporary pantries. For community members looking to help, the food bank anticipates an increased need for food by our emergency pantry network over the next eight weeks, as SNAP benefits will not be issued again until March at the earliest. Groups hosting food drives can deliver donations directly to responding pantries but it should be noted that it is not guaranteed that these donations will reach a furloughed worker specifically, as these agencies are continuing to serve the public at large. While food donations are incredibly important at this time, monetary donations to support the operations of the food bank, including warehousing and transportation, are crucial to meet the needs of those affected by the partial shutdown. Due to the Trade Mitigations, Second Harvests anticipates receiving a much higher volume of TEFAP products over the next 6 months, without a substantial increase in operational support from USDA to distribute the food. Monetary donations will ensure the food bank can distribute TEFAP and donated food as quickly and efficiently as possible, especially in this time of increased need.
